ENNIS, Texas. (Sept. 24, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Don Prudhomme-owned blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 6 qualifying spot Friday at the Texas Motorplex after powering to a performance of 4.869 seconds at 319.37 mph.

After spending last Sunday testing the tune-up of the Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., Johnson powered to his best performance since NHRA implemented the 85-percent nitromethane rule in July with the 4.869 at 319.37 effort on Friday night in the Lone Star State. The Iowa native stopped the clocks at 5.473 at 193.93 on his opening run of the weekend on a hot Texas Motorplex quarter-mile.

"The tune-up was a little too conservative on the first run," Johnson said. "We knew the conditions would be better at night. That's what we've been trying to do on the Friday night sessions. We've got a baseline where we can go out and run 4.80s at night. It's the best run I've made on 85-percent (nitromethane). You've got to qualify good and being sixth after Friday night is pretty good."

Johnson will look to improve his qualifying position on Saturday afternoon when qualifying sessions are scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (CT) at the Motorplex.
