Johnson Jr. Suffers First-Round Setback at Dallas

ENNIS, Texas. (Sept. 26, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. and the blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo maintained their position in the NHRA Funny Car standings despite falling in the first round of eliminations Sunday at the Texas Motorplex.

After posting his best performance since the change to the 85-pecent nitromethane rule, Johnson and the Skoal Racing crew were faced with drastically different conditions on Sunday as the hot Texas sun blistered the Texas Motorplex quarter mile. Johnson's Chevy flopper overpowered the track and recorded a run of 5.533 seconds at 191.33, while Medlen drove to a pass of 4.918 at 316.90 to claim the round win. Johnson stayed 11th in the points standings.

"We're taking things one step at a time," Johnson said. "We qualified very well. It was our best performance on 85-percent (nitromethane). With the change in the weather, we didn't back it down enough and overpowered the track. We were just too aggressive."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fourth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals, Sept. 30-Oct. 3, at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.
