Hammonds opens in 10th position on Friday in Dallas.

The first day of qualifying for the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals proved to be a productive one for Tom Hammonds and his Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care team. On his first attempt, Hammonds recorded a solid 6.894-second elapsed time, which placed his Cavalier well inside the Pro Stock field. Even so, the Hammonds crew knew improvement would be necessary in the evening session in order to maintain their position among the top sixteen.

Taking advantage of the cooler conditions, Hammonds sliced two-hundredths of a second off his earlier run, covering the Texas Motorplex's unique concrete quarter-mile in 6.877-seconds with a top speed of 200.62 mph. Although this placed the Hammonds entry tenth halfway through the qualifying procedure, the crew were soon making plans to find even more speed on Saturday.

"Although we made two clean passes, are in the show and were able to improve on our first run tonight, we're still not completely satisfied. I believe there's a lot left in our Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier, and we could have been more aggressive with our set up today.

"We're going to go back and look at the data from both runs and put more gear, more clutch, or a combination of both in the car for tomorrow, and see if we can improve our performance even more."
