STEVENS IS NO. 3 IN DALLAS QUALIFYING
Benefiting from a test session at a local Texas eighth-mile drag strip this week, Richie Stevens Jr. piloted the Team Mopar/Valspar Dodge Stratus R/T straight into the No. 3 spot in the Pro Stock class at the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals.
Every run in qualifying was a consistent, quick pass in temperatures soaring in the 90s and Stevens never veered out of the top four. His quickest pass of 6.687 seconds at 205.60 mph came in the cooler Friday-night session. His other laps included a 6.730/205.79, a 6.695/205.98 and a 6.722/205.35 in the hottest part of the day today.
Stevens follows Greg Anderson and Dave Connolly on the roster.
"We went and tested the other day on a hot track at North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas, just 30 miles north of Dallas," said Stevens. "That's what we needed and we got a good setup for it. The Team Molpar/Valspar Dodge seems to be working a lot better. The clutch graphs look good every run in low gear and that's where we had most of the problems this year.
"It's leaving the starting line pretty good. Mark (Ingersoll, crew chief) has got a good setup on it. We just have to go some rounds. I've got Warren Johnson first round. Hopefully I can help Allen out in the Countdown and take Warren out and he could help me out by taking out (Jim) Yates and getting him off my back in the points deal.
"We'll go out there and try to go some rounds. We ran good here last year (defending Pro Stock champion). It would be nice to repeat it.
"North Star Raceway is a nice place. The people are really nice and treated us good and we learned a lot the other day. It looks like it carried over and it's definitely helped Mark out with the setup of the cars and it's showing on the track."
As mentioned, Stevens faces Warren Johnson in first round of Pro Stock eliminations on Sunday.
A.J. GRABS THE NO. 4 SLOT IN DALLAS QUALIFYING
Allen Johnson slid right in behind his teammate Richie Stevens Jr. in fourth place in Pro Stock qualifying for the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals, posting a 6.690-second lap at 205.69 mph, also in the cooler Friday-night session.
His other passes were a 6.741/205.16, a 6.705/205.35 and a 6.706/205.47.
"We were very tickled with every run this weekend," said Johnson. "We went and worked on our hot-track setup on Wednesday up there in Denton, Texas, and we're just tickled to death right now with the way the cars are performing in the heat on a slick track.
"Hopefully I can do my job tomorrow as a driver in the first round take out (Jim) Yates and go from there and try to go a couple of rounds."
