Team Exide prepares for Texas two-step

Park Ridge, IL (October 17) Pre Race: As Winston Championship points leader Tony Schumacher and his Exide team savor the past month and a half of holding the points lead, they look forward to the O'Reilly Fallnationals in Ennis, TX, October 21-24, where they made a semifinal appearance on their last visit to the Texas Motorplex.

With three races remaining in the 1999 NHRA season, Schumacher and team will face their toughest challenges yet as they battle to hold onto their position on top of the Top Fuel standings. On their previous visit to the Motorplex, Schumacher ran 327.2 MPH, but was unable to back up that speed to set a new national record. At the time, that was the second fastest speed in NHRA history until Schumacher ran 327.9 MPH last month in Topeka, Kansas. Schumacher now holds the fastest three speeds in NHRA history, including his historic 330.23 MPH run in Phoenix earlier this year.

"We are eager to get to Texas," said Schumacher, "we ran well at both Houston and Dallas in the spring races and we look to continue where we left off."

"With only three races left, we are confident in our ability to hold our own in this Championship battle. We need to just keep doing the same things we have been all year."

With less than 100 points separating the Top 5, the O'Reilly Fallnationals should be a pivotal race to separate the serious contenders from the rest of the field. The Texas Motorplex has always been known for its high-speed, all-concrete quarter mile racing surface. Coupled with crew chief Dan Olson's tune-up, that could make for a potent combination as Schumacher looks to defend his points lead but also post his first ever victory.

"Billy Meyer has an awesome facility. With the horsepower Dan (Olson) has been making, look for some big numbers from this Exide dragster," said Schumacher.

Schumacher and Team Exide are coming off of their best ever qualifying effort two weeks ago in Memphis as they posted the second quickest time of the qualifying sessions. The importance of qualifying points is even more important as the number of available points becomes scarce entering the last three events.

"There is no room for anyone to make any mistakes at this point of the season. We have to make every pass count because the clock is ticking and there is no time to make up lost ground," analyzed Schumacher.

Top Fuel qualifying for the O'Reilly Fallnationals is scheduled for Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, October 24.
