Rick Santos, driver of the Oakwood Homes Federal-Mogul Dragster, finished runner-up at the Parts America Nationals last week in Topeka, Kan., increasing his lead in the national points chase to 54 over Darrell Russell.

Santos has eight wins in 12 starts in 1998 (three national and five divisional) and has been the top qualifier seven times.

This is Santos' fourth time competing at the Texas Motorplex. He won the Spring event last year. That was only his second win since joining forces with Jack O'Bannon Racing and his first win of 1997. Santos has one win and one runner-up finish at the Texas Motorplex.

Last year at the Texas Motorplex, Santos qualified third and maintained consistency, running elapsed times in the 5.6-second range throughout the weekend. He defeated Mike Bowers in the first round with and E.T. of 5.63. In round two, he defeated Frank Pedregon with an E.T. of 5.60 over Pedregon's 5.64. In the semi-finals, he defeated 1996 National Champion Bobby Taylor with an E.T. of 5.62 over Taylor's 5.69. In the final round, Santos defeated Michael Gunderson who had a red light foul. Santos E.T. was 5.62 in the finals.

"I'm looking forward to going back to Dallas," said Santos. "Dallas is where our season turned around last year. We decided to switch to the PSI blower and our performance improved from that point on. Dallas is a little different than most of the tracks because it is concrete all the way down. This helps with traction, especially in hot weather like Dallas has been having lately."
