John Force, Castrol GTX® Ford Mustang Pro Funny Car: Qualified: 1st at 4.844 seconds, 317.12 mph Racing Result: Beat Al Hofmann, Scotty Cannon, Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr.
Noteworthy: In winning his tenth race of the season and the 80th race of his career, Force clinched his 10th Winston Series Funny Car Championship, his seventh in succession.
John said: "That's one heckuva race team, boy, that Tommy Johnson and (Wes) Cerny, but (Austin) Coil and Bernie (Fedderly) and (John) Medlen had something for them in the final. I knew I needed to cut a light (a good reaction time). It tried to drive out of the groove -- but I got it back."
Tony Pedregon, Castrol SYNTEC„¢ Ford Mustang Pro Funny Car: Qualified: 11th at 5.016, 292.68 mph. Racing Result: Beat Jerry Toliver; lost to Whit Bazemore.
Noteworthy: Despite his early elimination, Tony retained a 154 point lead over second-place Whit Bazemore with only two races remaining. If Tony can maintain that advantage, he and Force will finish 1-2 for the third time in the last four years.
Tony said: "It was just weak (in the second round). We were with him (Bazemore) for just a couple hundred feet. We fought ignition problems all week. Now we'll just have to regroup and go on to Houston."
