Troubles Continue For Pawuk In Texas
10/22/01 ENNIS, TX Despite long hours in the engine shop in the search for more horsepower, Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk's qualifying woes continued at the Motorplex this past weekend. With a final bump spot of 6.914 seconds, Pawuk's Summit Racing Pontiac was only able to manage a best of 6.940 seconds, leaving him a distant 22nd on the list of hopefuls.
"This has obviously been the toughest stretch of my entire career," Pawuk admitted following his final qualifying attempt. "We made some major changes in our engine shop operation in the last two weeks, and it's going to take some time to get everyone back on the same track, but we don't have that luxury.
"We've been in six final rounds this season, including two non-points races, which is our best record ever, yet here we are, struggling to qualify in this last part of the season.
"I kind of feel like a golfer who's suddenly forgotten how to hit the ball off the tee after having won a bunch of tournaments earlier in the year. It's very frustrating."
Pawuk has completely re-organized his engine shop operation, with some changes in personnel having been a part of that, although lead engine builder and All-Star Drag Racing Team Finalist Scott Pastircak remains in charge.
"I can't fault our guys for their work ethic in the last few weeks," Pawuk admits. "The one thing that keeps us all going is the support we've received from Summit, Pontiac, Matco Tools, Mr. Heater, Pennzoil, Holley and the rest of our sponsors. They've been incredibly encouraging because they know how much we want to win. Believe me, knowing that your sponsors are behind you when you're down really means a lot.
"We're going to keep after it, and look for better results in Las Vegas and then at the Finals in Pomona."
Notable: Pawuk is now 9th in the NHRA Winston Top 10 standings.
Next: AC Delco Nationals, LVMS, Las Vegas, Nevada, 10/26-10/28
