Lucas Oil pro Morgan gearing up for final stretch run
DALLAS (Sept. 21) -- The Lucas Oil Ford Mustang has been a laboratory of sorts for veteran Pro Stock racer Larry Morgan this season.
He's helped bring the Blue Oval back to respectability in Pro Stock racing for the first time in two decades, but getting an entirely new engine program going has been a challenge, even for someone who has built motors his entire life.
"We're inching up on it," Morgan said. "I just checked out the engine and everything is looking good on it. We'll be ready for Dallas."
Heading into this weekend's 25th annual O'Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals, Morgan said his new program has evolved beyond survival and is in a fine-tuning mode to be a Countdown to the Championship-caliber car in 2011.
"I've done a lot of R&D this season," he said. "Now I really need to get down to racing this final stretch of the year so we're up to speed by 2011. I'm just trying to figure out everything so we'll be good next year. That's my goal."
Last week in Charlotte, Morgan went out early on a red light start in the first round of eliminations, but he said he's going to have the situation resolved be the time he hits the track in Dallas.
"We're going to be all right in Dallas," Morgan said. "We just spun the tires up real hard last race. We were just not quite ready for race day."
Before starting his race weekend Morgan is going to give back to the Dallas community by delivering meals to seniors through the Meals on Wheels program on Thursday. He will follow that up with a night of fun with the fans from 6-8 p.m. at Splitsville Bowling Center in Arlington.
