Dixon Records Second-Round Finish at Dallas

ENNIS, Texas. (Sept. 26, 2004) -- Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite team maintained their position in the points standings Sunday at the Texas Motorplex after racing to a second round finish.

The 35-time NHRA winner used a tune-up from crew chief Dick LaHaie to power to the quickest elapsed time of the opening round of eliminations to defeat No. 10 qualifier David Baca. Dixon used a starting-line advantage and never looked back, clocking a performance of 4.590 seconds at 321.50 mph to hold off Baca's run of 4.693 at 313.51. Dixon's 4.590-second elapsed time equaled his best qualifying time of the weekend.

In round two, Dixon's .078 of-a-second reaction time, which was third best of the eight drivers competing in the second round, was bettered by opponent David Grubnic's remarkable .012 of-a-second starting-line time. Grubnic's extraordinary launch allowed his 4.662, 319.07 pass to score the win over the Miller Lite car, which posted a performance of 4.615 at 310.48. Dixon remains sixth in the POWERade Top Fuel standings.

"Drag racing is about winning and losing and we got beat," Dixon said. "He (David Grubnic) was just about perfect and we lost. We'll move on to the next race in Chicago next weekend."

ESPN2 will broadcast two hours of final eliminations coverage from the O'Reilly Fall Nationals at 11 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Sept. 26.

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fourth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals, Sept. 30-Oct. 3, at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.
