DIXON DRIVES MILLER LITE RAIL TO QUARTERFINAL FINISH AT MOTORPLEX
ENNIS, Texas (Oct. 10, 2005) Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon (2002-03) raced his Miller Lite dragster to a quarterfinal finish Sunday at Texas Motorplex during final eliminations at the O'Reilly Fall Nationals.
For the second consecutive week, Dixon matched up against fellow two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Scott Kalitta (1994-95) in the first round of eliminations. Dixon, who qualified seventh, used the best reaction time of the first round (.053 of-a-second) and a 4.583 second, 320.97 mph Dick LaHaie tune-up to score the wire-to-wire victory over Kalitta, who recorded a pass of 4.621 at 318.84 in his Mac Tools dragster.
Following the opening round win, members from both Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite team and Skoal Racing crew worked to get Dixon's dragster prepared for a second round race against Melanie Troxel after the Miller Lite team experienced a mechanical issue during its post-race service. Dixon then used a starting line advantage to race to the early lead before the Miller Lite rail shook the tires forcing the veteran racer to pedal which allowed Troxel to sneak around and score the win. The Miller Lite/Ameriquest dragster turned in a run of 4.817 at 311.27, while Troxel's rail posted a pass of 4.558 at 327.43 to earn the round win.
Dixon remains second in the NHRA Top Fuel standings. The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fifth annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Oct. 20-23, at the Bruton Smith-owned The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Dixon won the spring Las Vegas event in April and is a four-time winner at The Strip. On Saturday, October 22, Dixon and the Miller Lite team will compete in the Top Fuel Shootout for $100,000. Dixon is a three-time winner of the eight-car bonus event.
