ENNIS, Texas - Federal Mogul Dragster rookie Joe Fuentes has his hopes high for this weekend's O'Reilly Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec to be held at the Texas Motorplex, just south of Dallas. With a strong outing at his last race that was cut short by parts breakage, Fuentes will not only be looking for his first round win, but first event win.
Fuentes, who owns J & D Electric in Austin, Texas, feels with the tune-up veteran tuner Ora Vasquez has given him, he can be a contender this weekend.
"We are putting the motor the same way we had it in Noble [Okla. - Division 4 race]," said Fuentes. "We have the same strategy we had in Noble, except this time we want to win. We cut a bunch of weight off the car and are going to try the beadlocks [lighter rear wheels], so we are going to see how that goes this weekend. We just want to run as good as we could have run in Oklahoma."
Fuentes has raced at the Motorplex twice this year, but feels his two previous outings will not help him with his new Vasquez combination.
"It was a totally different combination from when we were with the Buffs earlier in the year," explained Fuentes. "We will be pretty much starting from scratch for a Dallas tune-up; the only thing we are taking from our last two trips is that the track has a lot of bite."
Qualifying begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters. Final Qualifying sessions will be on Friday, with round one of eliminations on Saturday.
