Toliver Wants to Build on Good Test Results

ENNIS, Texas, Sept. 21, 2004 - The stormy weather that produced enough rain to wash out the Lucas Oil Nationals last weekend at Reading, Pa., came with a silver lining for Jerry Toliver's Schick Quattro/SNL: The Best of Will Ferrell Volume 2 Toyota Celica Funny Car team.

Rain Friday and Saturday that flooded virtually every spectator parking lot disappeared on Sunday and was followed by sunshine, thereby making it a perfect day for testing - as far as Toliver and friends were concerned.

And, as things turned out, it was, in Toliver's words, "a successful day of testing."

New crew chief Norm Grimes had four runs in which to become more familiar with tuning a nitromethane-fueled Funny Car after spending years with alcohol and injected nitro engines in NHRA's Sportsman alcohol dragster ranks. Grimes joined the team a few days before the Pennsylvania event.

"We basically made four runs Sunday without racing, and it was very beneficial," Toliver added. "Testing went well and we got the results we were looking for. We had good 60- and 330-foot elapsed times and I think the success breathed some new life into our hard-working crew."

The new combination will be tested again, only under competitive conditions, during the O'Reilly Fall Nationals, Friday through Sunday, at Billy Meyer's renovated Texas Motorplex.

The Motorplex features the sport's only all-concrete track and has yielded some of the sport's quickest and fastest elapsed times over the years.

Toliver was runner-up here in the 2000 fall race.

"The Motorplex is a good track and we're looking forward to racing there," said Toliver. "I know Norm still has a lot of questions, and we knew he'd have them, but he picked up things pretty quickly during testing. I truly believe he's the tuner of the future."

That future begins with qualifying runs on Friday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Sunday's competition begins at 11 a.m.
