Meyer looking to find 'the edge' this weekend in Dallas
ENNIS, Texas - Two weeks ago, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Jay Meyer saw his National Championship hopes end when Rick Santos and Mark Hentges raced each other in the finals in Reading. Just last weekend, Meyer had his hopes for a repeat Division 4 Championship ended when he redlighted in the first round in Noble, Okla. Going into this weekend's O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas, Meyer and his team have no pressure to perform, and plan to push the envelope in hopes of ending the season with a win in his home state.
Meyer, from Freeport, Texas, feels while his car has consistently been one of the top cars in the country, it still has more room to squeeze some more horsepower out of it. With the Motorplex's reputation for being one of the fastest tracks in the country, Meyer plans to have his car, which he calls 'Sweetness,' set on 'kill.'
"We're just going to go up there and do like we were doing earlier in the year, just have fun," said Meyer. "We're gonna have the full crew with us, and its gonna be a good time. We're gonna try to step on this thing a little more. Looking at Santos, when they ran that .27, obviously, the air was good, but he had to have figured out something. We haven't hurt a bearing all year long, we've been keeping the motor happy. I don't know where the 'edge' is. We're gonna try to push that a little bit this weekend and try to find it."
"I sure hope I don't step over it," laughed Meyer, "it could be a long fall. It might hurt."
Meyer ran a career best elapsed time of 5.382 seconds last month in Joliet, Ill., in similar conditions to those forecasted this weekend in Dallas. Meyer feels that 5.30's are definitely attainable this weekend.
"I think you are going to see some .30's this weekend," predicted Meyer. "If the air stays like it's supposed to be, we should see that, and low. 40's without a doubt. That track is always good no matter what. I think it is going to be good for the A/Fuel cars, and good for us [Blown Alcohol] too."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters with sessions at 1 and 5 p.m. Qualifying resumes on Saturday with one final session at 10:30 a.m., followed by first round of eliminations at 3 p.m. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
