Northrop surprises Anderson in opening round
ENNIS, Texas. (September 24, 2006) -- In a surprising first round loss, Greg Anderson was turned back by former comp racer, turned Pro Stock driver, Dave Northrop during eliminations at the NHRA O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec.
In the opening round match up, Northrop was out quickly and took a huge starting line advantage -- 47 hundredths of a second -- on Anderson. Anderson, behind the wheel of the KB Racing/Summit Racing Equipment Pro Stock Pontiac GTO, used the entire Texas Motorplex quarter-mile to try and run down his opponent.
Anderson's elapsed time for the pass was 6.653 seconds, while Northrop crossed the finish line three thousandths of a second in front of Anderson. Northrop's elapsed time was 6.697 seconds.
"I don't know what happened, but I do know that we missed an opportunity," said Anderson following his first round loss to Northrop. "I felt good today. The Summit Racing Pontiac was obviously great. I had all the confidence in the world with the car. I knew the car was going to run well. All I had to do was be solid and concentrate on that light. Somehow my concentration was broken. I don't know when or how. I didn't think I missed the light but the timing slip says otherwise. So I did, and now I've got to take the consequences.
"Dave Northrop in the other lane did a good job. My hat is off to him. He won the race and he deserves it. I've got to come back and do better next time. We're still in the running to win our fourth POWERade championship."
With four races on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing schedule, the POWERade Pro Stock point battle unofficially shakes out as follows: 1.) Jason Line, 1,358 points; 2.) Greg Anderson, 1,280 (-78); and Dave Connolly, 1,218 (-140). Anderson leads Connolly by 62 points.
