SCELZI SNAGS NO. 9 IN DALLAS QUALIFYING
ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 22, 2007) - Four-time NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series champion Gary Scelzi snagged the No. 9 spot in qualifying for the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex today. He's is so buoyed by the performance of the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car that he's taken to quoting rock music lyrics.
"It's like the Nickelback song, 'Feeling Too Damn Good,'" he said after posting the second quickest pass of the final qualifying round in 90-degree heat and high humidity: a 4.907-second pass at 313.58 mph. His quickest qualifying run was a 4.863/307.72, established in the Friday evening session.
Scelzi's other passes included a 4.960/307.02 and a 4.914/315.86.
"Going down the race track is so important," he added. "These aren't the best of conditions and Todd (Okuhara, crew chief along with Phil Shuler) got on the radio before we ran the last run and he goes 'We're going to push it a little bit on this run.' I said, 'It's about time, you little coward.
"He started laughing. It was exciting. At 4.90, that was the second quick of that round. (Teammate Jack) Beckman was better than us on that one (4.888/314.53). It speaks volumes. It's going to be hot tomorrow and if we get a little bit of luck on our side, we could do some damage."
Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler tune both the Mopar/Oakley Dodge and the Valvoline/MTS Dodge of Jack Beckman, with Okuhara taking the lead on the Mopar/Oakley car.
Scelzi faces Cruz Pedregon in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations and is fourth in the Countdown to Four point standings entering Sunday's event. No. 1 in points Robert Hight failed to qualify for the second time this season.
