ENNIS, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Doug Kalitta, Cruz Pedregon, and Scott Geffrion are the number one qualifiers in their respective classes after one day of the Castrol Lone Star Nationals in Ennis, Texas. All three drivers captured their pole positions during the night qualifying sessions.
This is the first time Doug Kalitta has qualified number one in his first year as the pilot for the American International Airways/Kitty Hawk Top Fuel dragster. He covered the quarter-mile in 4.650 seconds at 314.68 miles per hour. The former USAC sprint car Champion explains that he is having a great time with his new ride. He said "they are really exciting to drive and he is becoming more comfortable with every pass." The 33-year-old driver from Ypsilanti, Mich. went on to explain he "can't wait to get past round one and really wants to go four rounds on Sunday."
Cruz Pedregon just continues to cruise as he is qualified number one for the fourth time this year at NHRA national events and was also number one qualifier at the special non-points race. The driver of the Interstate Batteries/ Hot Rod Magazine Funny Car ran a 4.855 elapsed time at a track record 314.79 miles per hour. The next closest competitor is John Force driving his special edition Elvis Presley car, and he is more than a tenth behind Cruz. The Moorpark, Calif. Driver credits his crew chief, Wes Cerny, with his new found success.
Scott Geoffrion is number one qualifier for the first since Rockingham last year. Geoffrion's number one pass was a 7.022 elapsed time at 196.76 mile per hour. He said, "What a great run, I knew as soon as I got into second gear that Dodge Avenger was on a great run. We have Terry Adams helping tune our cars now and it obviously has worked." The 32-year-old driver in Team Mopar Pro Stock was runner-up here last year.
Qualifying will resume tomorrow, May 2, 1998, at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Eliminations will start in all of the Federal-Mogul classes tomorrow.
