HILL LOOKS READY TO MAKE STRONG COMEBACK IN TOP FUEL ENNIS, Texas -- The fast boat, exotic motorcycle and blazing Corvette are fun, but Eddie Hill never thinks about quitting during his Top Fuel slump because all those toys can't give him what he craves. Hill loves the adrenalin surge, the thrill of meeting new fans, the pounding of his heart in his chest and the sight of packed grandstands stretching into a thin, melted blur, all of which can only be provided by screaming down the quarter-mile faster than 300 mph in his Pennzoil Dragster. That keeps Hill, 61, going despite sitting in 15th place in the NHRA Winston point standings after five races this season. He has only two wins since capturing the NHRA Winston title in 1993. "Although it's frustrating and humiliating to go through what I went through, I can't imagine doing anything else," Hill said. "What would I do? I've got the fast boat and the Corvette, and (his wife) Ercie and I like to ride around on the motorcycle, but none of that is very satisfying without the race car. I just can't get too far down when I see how nice the folks are to us." Hill, from Wichita Falls, Texas, will try to climb into the top 10 of the point standings at the inaugural, $1,481,100 Lone Star Nationals, May 1-4, at Texas Motorplex. This race is the seventh event of the 22-event, $30-million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series in 1997. New crew chief Dan Olson could be the answer for Hill's recent woes. Olson joined the team as a consultant in early March after Hill released longtime crew chief Fuzzy Carter, and he was promoted to crew chief in mid-April. Hill responded by qualifying a season-best 12th and winning his first round of the year at the Fram Nationals in Atlanta. "So far, we've been very complementary," Hill said of Olson. "A lot of the curves are starting to line up. The performance hasn't picked up that much, but I feel like we're getting there."
