ENNIS, Texas, May 28, 2000 - Doug Herbert recorded his quickest run of the 2000 NHRA Top Fuel season Saturday afternoon at the Texas Motorplex, posting a time of 4.640 seconds at 318.13 mph in the Snap-on Racing dragster.

Herbert began eliminations from the No. 7 position, going against Rhonda Hartman-Smith in the first round. But he fouled away his chance to advance with a red-light start.

"I guess you aren't trying hard enough if you don't do that once in a while," said Herbert, shaking his head. "I really don't know what I was thinking. Fortunately we don't have to wait long to get back at it to forget this one."

Herbert will begin qualifying for the Route 66 Nationals Friday at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

Qualified: No. 7, 4.640 seconds at 318.13 mph

First round: Rhonda Hartman-Smith def. Herbert

Pro Winners: Gary Scelzi in Top Fuel; John Force in Funny Car; V. Gaines in Pro Stock.
