Herbert foiled by faulty clutch, McClenathan in Texas.

ENNIS, Texas, October 13, 2002 - A clutch problem slowed Doug Herbert's Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster in the quarterfinals of the O'Reilly Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex Sunday and he was sent to the sidelines by Cory McClenathan.

It was an early end to what had otherwise been another good weekend of NHRA POWERade Series competition for the Cherryville, N.C. driver. He'd qualified second (4.595 seconds) and produced the quickest elapsed time of the first round and his best of the event (4.559 seconds) in his first-round victory.

But the clutch didn't work properly against Cory McClenathan and Herbert slowed to a 4.710 at 314.46 mph while McClenathan posted a 4.602 at 315.01 mph. "The tires started shaking and smoking early and I had to pedal it," reported Herbert, who had a .485-.508 advantage at the starting line. "I was catching him at the finish line but I needed the track to be a little bit longer. Something went away in the clutch."

Herbert's 4.559 at 316.78 mph easily beat Mike Smith's 6.202 at 142.42.

Herbert stayed seventh in points with 1182.

The next event is the AC-Delco Las Vegas Nationals, Oct. 25-27, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Qualified: No. 2, 4.595 seconds at 308.32 mph; First round: Herbert, 4.559 at 316.78 def. Mike Smith, 6.202 at 142.42; Quarterfinals: Cory McClenathan, 4. 602 at 315.01 def. Herbert, 4.710 at 316.78.
