ENNIS, Texas - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells closed his 2000 season with a bang by winning this past weekend's O'Reilly Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas. In addition to scoring his second national event win this year (third career), Wells became the second Blown Alcohol Dragster to record a 5.3 second elapsed time when he ran a 5.392 at 258.22 miles per hour in defeating heavy hitter Jay Meyer's 5.63 at 246 mph in the final.

Wells, who helps run his family's Blue Bunny Ice Cream plant in LeMars, Iowa, qualified No. 4 with a 5.496 at 258.52 mph [top speed of race] and defeated Shelly Howard, Steve Faria, and Mark Hentges on his way to the final with e.t.'s of 5.555, 5.490, and 5.416.

"We have been working on some different stuff that finally started to work," said Wells. "We have been able to dial it in a little bit more, and it really ran good. We were a little bit more conservative this race, and just stepped on it a little bit at a time."

The win capped off a roller coaster year for the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team. After losing the Division 5 Championship this year, with the win, Wells hopes to take the momentum into 2001.

"We have been looking for that win for quite a while now," commented Wells. "We have been shaking the tires at the last couple of races, and since we got rid of that, it has turned a whole lot of things around. We hope to be able to pick up where we left off next year, because we had to change so many things this year. We'll just hit it hard when next season rolls around."
