ENNIS, Texas - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells hopes to improve on his last two outings with a strong showing at this weekend's O'Reilly Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas.
The LeMars, Iowa resident has went out in the early rounds of his last two races after qualifying in the top three. At the Advance Autoparts Nationals in Topeka, Kan., Wells qualified No. 3 and recorded the quickest pass by a Blown Alcohol Dragster of the weekend, but lost on a holeshot in round two. At the Autozone Nationals in Memphis, Tenn., Wells qualified No. 2 with a career best elapsed time of 5.45, but smoked the tires and lost in the first round. This weekend, Wells looks to concentrate on consistency, rather than the aggressive approach that has resulted in the early exits.
Wells said, "We're going to try to calm it down and not be so aggressive with the car, instead of it being so wild. We'll just have to make a couple of passes down there and see what happens."
Even though Wells plans to be less aggressive this weekend, he still feels that the all concrete racing surface at the Motorplex will be able to hold some good numbers.
"The track is usually pretty good there," explained Wells. "Normally we run pretty good there, its just the last few outings there we have had some bad things happen. We'll just make a couple of test passes, see what happens, and go from there."
"The first run we'll be looking for a combination that will get the car down the track, then try to improve on that in later runs. We will still stay aggressive in qualifying, we always try to qualify as high as we can."
Qualifying begins at 6 p.m. for the Federal Mogul Dragsters, with the final two qualifying shots following on Friday. First round eliminations will start on Saturday, and conclude on Sunday.
