Cory's bid for event title ends in round two
ENNIS, Texas (September 26, 2004) -- After easily turning back Joe Hartley in the opening round of eliminations at the NHRA O'Reilly Fall Nationals , Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Berryman Products Top Fuel Dragster, when tire smoke against Tony Schumacher ended his bid for an event title.
Against Hartley, McClenathan ran a 4.664-second pass nearly two tenth of a second faster at the Texas Motorplex finish line.
Near even at the green starting light, Schumacher pulled away after McClenathan lost traction just before half-track.
"We were in the race against Schumacher until the half way mark when it (the tires) broke loose," said McClenathan, who qualified No. 5. "We're getting better in the clutch department and what these new Goodyears will hold and will try to go to the later rounds at Chicago.
"Thanks to all the people from Berryman Products that stopped by to wish us well this weekend. It would have been a better ending if we could have gone to the winner's circle."
McClenathan leaves Dallas with 975 points, good for seventh in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings.
ESPN2 will air same-day television coverage of eliminations tonight (September 26) from 11 p.m. until 1 a.m. (The elimination show will be repeated on ESPN2 from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, October 1.) Television times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and subject to change at anytime. Check local listings.
