CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES CASTROL NATIONALS TEXAS MOTORPLEX ENNIS, TEXAS NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 1999
PRO STOCK -- CAMARO Z28
MIKE EDWARDS, DEWCO SALES CAMARO Z28, made it to the final round for the second straight race, and was defeated this time by the other half of the Johnson family, Warren. Warren Johnson beat Edwards with a 6.945-second pass at 198.85 mph to Edwards' 7.002/196.72. Edwards defeated Warren Johnson in the semifinals in Houston, then lost to Kurt in the final. Here, Edwards defeated Kurt Johnson in the semifinal, then was ousted by Warren in the final.
EDWARDS: "I just can't beat them both in the same day." ON THE FINAL ROUND: "I had a little advantage (.437 reaction time for Edwards, .461 for Warren), but it didn't last very long. He made an awesome run. He made a run that was pretty good for the conditions on the track right now. I guess that's why he's got the #1 on his window. I had to have a .404 (reaction time) to beat him. That's guessing as far as I'm concerned. I go up there not guessing, I go up there to win the race. I couldn't have won that round. I'm really proud of my team and our effort in the last two races. We have come a long way. I'd like to give a big thanks to Mary Lou (Kight) and all the support she's given me since we lost our number one guy JK (John Kight), and also Don Winget, the owner of Dewco Sales, and Chevrolet, of course, Gary Claudio. He took a chance on me and we're grateful for his support." WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BEAT THE JOHNSON BOYS? "It's really hard. If they make a really good run and if they leave on time there's nobody in the pits who is going to beat them, they're that fast. They have to make a pretty bad run or mess up driving. There are cars (and drivers) that are faster than I am who could beat them out here. Warren has been doing this a long time. He's been good at it and I give him a lot of credit." ON THE RUN AGAINST KJ: "I just went faster, I think he had trouble. I acatually outran him some, so I'm sure he had a problem. I knew I had him all the way. I saw him only at the finish line, he creeped up on me just at the very end." ON BEATING YOUR CHEVROLET TEAMMATE: "I had gone up to KJ and shook his hand before I ran him and told him to have a safe race and told him that since we are teammates we are supposed to take turns and it was my turn to win. He thought that was a pretty good line, he said."
