RIVERSIDE, Calif. (September 22, 2001)– Dale Armstrong, Crew Chief for Jerry Toliver of the World Wrestling Federation Racing team, was recently named among the Top 10 Drivers from the first 50 years of National Hot Rod Association history.
“ It is such an incredible honor to be nominated with the best drivers in NHRA history,” Armstrong said. “ It is extremely overwhelming and gratifying to know that the contribution I have made to this sport has been recognized.”
As a driver, Armstrong won 12 NHRA Pro Comp national event titles during his seven years as a competitor in the Sportsman class including three U.S. Nationals championships. While competing in the IHRA circuit in 1976, Armstrong won seven of nine Pro Comp National events to take the world championship title.
Adding to Armstrong’s list of accomplishments is his extensive history as the crew chief for drivers such as Kenny Bernstein, Don Prudhomme, and Jerry Toliver. Armstrong tuned Bernstein’s car when he won four consecutive NHRA Funny Car championships (1985-88), the Top Fuel championship in 1996 and ran the first 300-mph pass in a Top Fuel Dragster in 1995.
In addition to driving and tuning, Armstrong was also the first crew chief to utilize wind tunnel testing, computer data recorders, as well as developing the first lock-up-style clutch; all of which are still used today.
“ When I joined Toliver Racing it was with the intention that Jerry would win the Funny Car Championship,” Armstrong said. “ This is a good team with a very capable driver behind the wheel. We are in a bit of a rough spot right now but Jerry and I both have every intention of putting this team back on top.”
“ When Dale joined WWF Racing I knew this team had the best crew chief out there,” said Toliver, driver of the WWF Get R.E.A.L Pontiac Firebird Funny Car. “ I am Dale’s biggest fan and supporter and to know this team is lead by the one of the greatest is an incredible honor. Dale has a tremendous amount of professionalism, love for the sport and leadership skills. You couldn’t ask for a better guy to lead your team.”
