Cruz Pedregon to compete in Kart race at Infineon Raceway Charity event.
CAMARILLO, Calif. (March 6, 2003) -- Advance Auto Parts nitro Funny Car driver Cruz Pedregon will be among an elite group of drivers on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series circuit to participate in a karting event held at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California. Race fans will have the rare opportunity to test their skills against the former NHRA world champion while helping to raise funds for a charitable cause.
Infineon Raceway will host its first "NHRA Tour de Charity" on its 16-turn, three-quarter-mile kart track on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registered race fans will spend a day of karting alongside Cruz Pedregon and other NHRA drivers in 100cc sprint karts, capable of top speeds of 70 mph. The Jim Russell Racing Drivers School will provide karts, race suits, classroom instruction and on-track pointers for all competitors. Participants will race for a chance to compete in a 10-lap feature race for a grand prize. Other giveaways throughout the day will also include Cruz Pedregon autographed items. All proceeds benefit the Speedway Children's Charity.
Cruz will then compete against other top NHRA drivers in a 10-lap race feature at the end of the day for "King of the Track" bragging rights.
"I'm very excited about the event," comments Cruz, "Bruton Smith has provided an excellent venue to get together with fellow NHRA drivers -- now we are able to mix it up a bit and compete 'turning right and left' -- it will be interesting to see how we do against each other."
As a former Go-Kart Champion (1986), Cruz Pedregon is no stranger to the world of karting. Before he began his career in drag racing, Cruz spent many days racing at Ventura Raceway in southern California. When asked about his prior experience and possible advantage over the other drivers, Cruz remarked "It's been so long-we'll find out!"
Fans are also invited to the track to watch the festivities and get autographs/pictures of Cruz Pedregon.
