KENT, Wash. (Aug. 3, 2012) – The 25th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals are off to a fine start for Funny Car pilot Johnny Gray and his Big O Tires/SpeeDee Oil Change & Tune-Up Dodge Charger R/T. The hard-charging Service Central branch of the Don Schumacher Racing group of nitro-breathing beasts continued to bare teeth to the competition, with a pair of quick passes that has Gray pausing provisionally at fourth in the qualifying line-up.

In the first session, Gray swept two of the bonus qualifying points into his basket with a swift 4.167 at 292.96 mph that was second-quickest of all. In the second round of the day, the Artesia, N.M., resident blasted to an improved 4.156 at 300. 86 – third quickest and worthy of another bonus mark.

"Well, we had a few issues on that first run; she dropped a hole," said Gray. "And the second run was actually just a little bit lazy leaving, but the car made a nice run. Anytime you can go out there and stay in the top two or three of the session, you're driving a pretty good hot rod."

Gray, currently fifth in the Full Throttle Series standings, will have two more chances to climb in the qualifying order on Saturday in preparation for eliminations on Sunday.

"We were a little conservative, but we're running in our comfort zone," said Gray. "A good, consistent racecar showed up today. We're ready to make a couple of nice runs tomorrow and let everyone know that our Big O Tires/SpeeDee Dodge is a reliable racecar that will be ready for Sunday."
