"THE SARGE" TAKES FOURTH STARTING POSITION

COMMERCE, Ga., April 18 - Using a 3.851-second run at 306.19 mph during final qualifying, U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher swiped the fourth starting spot for Sunday's 29th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

After posting his sixth straight top-six qualifying effort, Schumacher set up a meeting with 13th-place qualifier, Terry McMillen, in the opening round of final eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. EDT. It will be the first time the pair has met this year.

"As always, I'm looking forward to race day," said the defending world champion. "We're going to come out slugging tomorrow, I'll guarantee you that. We want to stay hot."

Schumacher will be trying to record his third consecutive victory after bagging first-place trophies in Houston and Las Vegas, respectively.

"We've been real consistent of late, which is important," he added. "You never want to take yourself out. We'll line up against Terry and give him our best shot. That's the way you have to do it."

On Sunday, Schumacher will be attempting to take home his first Southern Nationals trophy. Atlanta Dragway is one of two tracks on the NHRA tour where he has failed to win in his career.

"We got close last season, but lost in the finals," he said. "Hopefully, this is our year to get it done."
