SCHUMACHER THIRD AFTER DAY ONE

COMMERCE, Ga., April 25 - Piloting his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, landed in the third starting spot after the first day of qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals here at Atlanta Dragway. Schumacher banked a 4.582-second pass at 324.44 mph in the initial session and thus grabbed a top three position heading into Saturday's final two qualifying runs.

"That's a good start to the weekend," offered the Chicago-area resident. "It was nice to put up the kind of pass that we did during the heat of the day, which will be what we face on race day. We could use a solid result on Sunday after going out in the second round the last two races."

Carrying special decals on his car in honor of the U.S. Army Reserve's 100th anniversary, Schumacher will be shooting for his first career victory at Atlanta Dragway. "It's one of the few tracks where we have not gotten to the winner's circle," he added. "We'd like to change that once and for all. It's always been a challenge here for some unknown reason."

Schumacher arrived in the Peachtree State holding a 35-point lead in the Top Fuel standings over Larry Dixon.

"And, we would like to keep that lead upon our departure," he said. "We like being the ones at the top. We don't want to be a follower."
