JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO FIRST-ROUND EFFORT AT ATLANTA

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 7, 2006) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to an opening-round effort Sunday at Atlanta Dragway during final eliminations for the 26th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals.

After making the 16-car field on his fourth and final qualifying attempt, Johnson was pitted against No. 1 qualifier John Force. Johnson used a slight starting-line advantage to jump to the lead, but the Skoal Racing Monte Carlo lost traction early in the run and slowed to a 7.103-second pass, while Force cruised to a run of 4.761 seconds at 327.66 mph to earn the win light. Johnson currently sits sixth in the Funny Car standings.

"We struggled in qualifying and never really got a good handle on the race track," Johnson said. "The weather conditions changed dramatically today and they stood on it. The car rattled the tires and pulled me to the left and continued to go left and smoked the tires. We'll do some testing on Monday, put Atlanta behind us, and hopefully get back on track at Columbus."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 42nd annual Pontiac Performance Nationals, May 18-21, at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio.
