CAPPS OUT IN FIRST ROUND IN ATLANTA, MAINTAINS POINTS LEAD
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 7, 2006) - NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car points leader Ron Capps snapped his string of four straight final-round appearances (five for the year) today after getting beat in the opening stanza of eliminations at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Capps still held on to his points lead, and now tops John Force, who was eliminated in the quarterfinals, by 96 points.
No. 10 qualifier Capps, driving the Brut Dodge Stratus R/T, launched out of the starting gate .037 of a second ahead of Pedregon, but came up 16 inches (.0029 of a second) short at the finish line, losing to Pedregon's 4.753/326.87 with his 4.792/321.96.
"It's already been one of those grueling weekends," he said of qualifying in the bottom half of the field and the four-hour-plus rain delay today. "The weather threw different curve balls at all the crew chiefs (including overcast, cool and near-perfect conditions once the event was green-flagged today).
"That was an epic first round, with all the 4.70s (elapsed times in seconds) that were thrown out (eight of the 16 starters). It was good for the fans," he added.
"We're going to have these kind of weekends. I'm looking forward to a week off, for sure, but I'm really looking forward to getting to Columbus and Topeka. We're going to have some warm weather there and we'll get back to doing what we do.
"I knew that streak had to end, but it's been a fun ride and we'll just start building up those POWERade points again.
"The Brut team gives Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) a great car, they put it together great, nothing falls off. They do a great job, and Ace is able to tune it. It just didn't run quite as good as he wanted, but we didn't really expect Cruz Pedregon and his team to run that good."
Next up is the NHRA Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, May 19-21.
