Whisnant to race in Atlanta

COMMERCE, Ga. -- When eliminations get underway at the 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals, Mark Whisnant driver of the RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Chevrolet Cavalier, will assume the 16th position on the Pro Stock eliminations ladder.

Coming into the last session of qualifying on Saturday, Whisnant was not qualified. The RW Performance team knew that it would take a last ditch effort to place their Cavalier in tomorrow's race. Team RW rose to the occasion when Whisnant clocked 6.872 / 199.70 mph to place him 16th and racing on Sunday.

"You don't know what pressure is until you are going into the last session not qualified at your home race track," said Whisnant "Good thing we only race here once a year, I don't know if I can take much more of this.

"Boy that was close. We were really sweating it coming into the last session. We could not figure out why the car would not run in the morning session. My crew chiefs Gray (Pearman) and Markus (Svensson) decided to go for the Hail Mary this afternoon. What ever they did worked, because we are racing on Sunday.

"Tomorrow it is going to be a whole different ball game. It is supposed to be cooler and overcast in the morning. This track will be completely different. We will now spend the night preparing for the race.

"Tomorrow we will have a big crowd of family and friend all here to watch us race; no pressure there. In a prefect world we would love to win this race, but realistically, tomorrow we will do the best job that we can, and try and make them all proud."

Eliminations at the 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals will begin at 11:00 AM EST on Sunday May 4.
