Atlanta: Whisnant returns to his home track.

COMMERCE, Ga. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Pro Stock Chevrolet Cavalier, has a short distance to travel for this weekends 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Whisnant's earliest memories are of racing with his Father Reid at the Atlanta Dragway which is just a short drive from his home in Stockbridge, Ga.

"Our family has been racing here in Commerce for as long as I can remember," said Whisnant. "My earliest memories are of begging at this racetrack. My family has a long history here, so it is always fun to race here.

"There would be no greater thrill for me than to win this race, and I think this year we have a pretty good chance of making that happen.

"Right now, I have a great team backing me up in the pits. My crew chiefs Gary (Pearman) and Markus (Svensson) are pulling everything they can out of this RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Cavalier. At each race they fine tune, and tweak to get just a little bit more out of this Chevy, but they cannot do it all by themselves.

"Backing up Markus and Gary in the pits are my Brother Terry, Dennis LaMonte (who has been with us forever), my wife Gina, and my Dad Reid. They all work hard every day: whether we are at the shop, or at the racetrack. This is a team, and everyone has a job to do. Without all of the hard work these people do, we would not be able to race.

"Of coarse I would not be racing if it were not for my Father, Reid. As a kid, it was always my dream to be just like my Dad. I idolized him as a driver and a person; I wanted to be just like him. To follow in his footsteps, as the driver of our racecar, is both a thrill and an honor for me.

"A win here this weekend at our home track would be the best way I could think of to say thank you. I am going to give it everything I have, and hopefully we will end up in the winner's circle on Sunday night."

Qualifying at the 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga. will begin on Friday May 2 and continue on Saturday May 3. Eliminations will take place at 11:00 Am EST on Sunday May 4.
