COMMERCE, Ga. -- This weekend, Greg Anderson, driver of the Vegas General Construction Pontiac Grand Am, returns to Commerce, Ga. for the running of the 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Anderson, of Charlotte, N.C., has logged many hours at the Atlanta Dragway and feels like it is his second home.
"I have spent a lot of time at the Atlanta Dragway," said Anderson. "It feels like I have made a million laps here. When I worked for Warren (Johnson) it seems like we were always here testing. Now that our shop is up in Charlotte, it is still very convenient to come here and test.
"I have high hopes for this weekend. Not just because I have logged so much time here, but because this track owes me one.
"Last year we should have won this race. We qualified number 1, had quick ET of every round. If our motor had not blown up in the final, we would have won this race. In 2001, I red lit in the final round. So, if there is anything to the law of averages: this should be my year. But I am not counting my chickens just yet.
"Warren and Kurt (Johnson) are going to be tough to get past. We were down here a couple weeks ago, and Warren was real quick. It could be Warren's familiarity with the track, but I really think he has something on the rest of us at this track. If I can get past them, that will be an accomplishment all by itself. After that we will just have to see how it goes."
Qualifying at the 23rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga., will begin on Friday May 2 and continue on Saturday May 3. Eliminations will take place at 11:00 Am EST on Sunday May 4.
