For Anderson Atlanta Dragway one of his favorite tracks
COMMERCE, Ga. -- Every driver has a few tracks that can be called a favorite. For Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson, a native of Duluth, Minn., who now lives in the Charlotte N.C. area, one of those few is Atlanta Dragway where this weekend's NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac unfolds.
"I love Atlanta Dragway," said Anderson, who drives the KB Racing LLC/Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO. "I've had a lot of success there. That builds your confidence. Coming off a huge weekend like Jason (Line, teammate) and I had at Bristol just adds to that confidence. This team seems to operate extremely well when our confidence is up. The more confidence, the better we usually are. Hopefully we can keep the ball rolling at Atlanta."
At last weekend's Bristol race, Anderson was the No. 2 qualifier and runner-up to Line. Meanwhile, Line had what is arguably the best weekend of his career, when he took the No. 1 qualifying spot and ran low elapsed time and top speed of the event during eliminations en route to the winner's circle.
Since 1998, the first year that Anderson began driving, he has gone to five final rounds at Atlanta Dragway. He was runner-up in 2001 (Jim Yates), 2002 (Allen Johnson) and 2003(Warren Johnson). He broke through for his first win against Larry Morgan in 2004 and defeated Line last year. In addition, he has three No. 1 qualifying positions (2001-2003).
"As a driver you always want to do well," added Anderson, "but at Atlanta there is a lot of extra incentive since the race is sponsored by two of our major marketing partners -- Summit Racing Equipment and Pontiac."
At Atlanta Dragway, qualifying for Anderson and his KB Racing LLC/Summit Racing Equipment Pro Stock Pontiac GTO begins with two Pro Stock sessions on Friday, May 5, scheduled for 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. and concludes with two additional Pro Stock sessions on Saturday, May 6, at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Anderson begins his quest for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac Pro Stock title on Sunday, May 7, with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11 a.m. All times are local Atlanta time (ET) and subject to change at anytime.
Qualifying highlights for the 26th annual NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday evening (May 6) from 9-11 p.m. ESPN2 will also air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 7 until 10 p.m. on Sunday (May 7).
