GOODYEAR-EQUIPPED CARS WIN FOUR, SET FOUR RECORDS
ATLANTA, Georgia (March 21, 2009) -- Records fell about as often as the stubborn spring rain and when the Summit Racing NHRA Summer Nationals was over at the Atlanta Dragway, four drivers using Goodyear tires captured a trophy.
Morgan Lucas (in Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) and Pat Ross (Competition Eliminator) all won their category on Goodyears.
The Full Throttle Drag Racing Series professional racing categories had record-setting efforts. Greg Anderson set a track Pro Stock elapsed time record, then set another. The final track mark was 6.557 seconds. Warren Johnson established a new track mark for the top speed in Pro Stock, 211.26 mph.
Ashley Force Hood turned in the fastest two Funny Car speeds in the 1,000-foot era during eliminations. Her fastest pass was 312.13 mph. The NHRA does not consider elapsed times and speeds produced at the 1,000-foot distance to be official records. The Top Fuel and Funny Car categories race to 1,000 feet.
Lucas beat Spencer Massey in the Top Fuel final. Neither driver had won a final round in the category.
Beckman bested Force Hood in the final of Funny Car.
Edwards beat defending series champion Jeg Coughlin in the Pro Stock final. The soggy weather that plagued the event forced the Pro Stock final to be contested on Monday.
Ross beat Arnie Martell in the final round of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' Competition Eliminator category. Both cars raced on Goodyear tires and it marked the second straight event in which a Goodyear-shod car won the category in national competition.
