Densham aiming for round wins in Atlanta

COMMERCE, Ga. -- Gary Densham qualified in the No. 14 spot Saturday, driving his Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo to a 4.927-second pass at 310.05 mph at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

This is the second consecutive event that Densham has started the final elimination day in the 14th position. He's hoping this time he moves past the first round.

"We were 14th in Bristol and we got beat by the eventual race winner (Gary Scelzi) and I think it's time for us to post a round victory," Densham said. "I see improvement by this team every week and I think it's time to have some positive results to back that up."

Rain delayed the second and final qualifying session of the weekend but the teams were able to come back and make the pass when the track was dry. By then, the conditions had changed.

Densham's car got out of the groove a little on the last pass, hitting a cone in the center lane. The time was disqualified, but it wasn't quicker than his 4.92 regardless.

"We sat around for a while and it got cooler and cooler and I thought it was going to be a perfect chance for us to shoot for a lower E.T.," Densham said. "The conditions were perfect and we saw some lower times in the second session by a handful of cars. We were on a good run and then the Racebricks car started drifting toward the centerline. I really didn't want to come off the gas until the last second."

Still, Densham is qualified and ready to race on Sunday.

"This team is starting to gain a little momentum and the best part is that we are racing on Sunday," Densham said. "You can't win a race if you don't qualify for Sunday's show. We're in the show and we've learned a lot from the data this weekend and that's going to help us tomorrow and at the next few races that will have similar conditions."

Final eliminations are set for 11 a.m. on Sunday. ESPN2 will air coverage of final eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
