COMMERCE, Ga., May 4, 2003 - Doug Herbert's assessment of his Sunday at the Summit Racing Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway was succinct.

"Sometimes you're the windshield and sometimes you're the bug," he said. "Today, we were the bug."

It could be called a lack of racing luck because Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster ran just about what crew chief Ron Douglas predicted, but neither he nor Herbert thought Darrell Russell would run quicker. Russell did, simply out-running Herbert in the best race of the opening round - 4.597 seconds at 320.13 mph to 4.617 at 316.97. Russell made it all the way to the finals before he lost to Larry Dixon.

"We thought a low 4.60 would win it," added Herbert, "but his 4.59 was the quickest time of the round and I had third-quickest." It was no consolation that his time was the quickest for a first-round runner-up.

"All-in-all, it was another good weekend at the track. We got down the track on every run - although we probably could've used the one Friday night qualifying run that was rained out," Herbert said. "We didn't hurt any parts, and that's real good considering we hurt quite a few last week in Bristol (Tenn.)."

Herbert held onto fourth place in NHRA POWERade Series points with 394. Dixon leads with 620.

After taking Mother's Day weekend off, Herbert and his team return to competition in the K&N Filters SuperNationals at Englishtown, N.J., May 16-18. It's the beginning of three straight races and is followed by stops in Topeka, Kan., and Joliet, Ill.
