COMMERCE, Ga. (May 15, 2004) -- A stout pass of 4.567 seconds at 324.51 mph at Atlanta Dragway put David Baca, driver of the American Racing dragster, in the top half of the field for eliminations tomorrow at the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac.

Baca, who qualified No. 6, will face Brandon Bernstein, who qualified 11th with a run of 4.680 seconds, in tomorrow's opening round of eliminations. It's the first time the pair has met in their respective careers.

"I'm thankful we ran that big number on Friday night," said Baca. "After getting firmly in the field, (crew chief) Johnny West, Larry Meyer and my partner Rick Henkelman decided to see how good the track was in the two sessions today. We overpowered the track both times. This racetrack is hot and sticky. I'm hopeful we'll have something for Brandon (Bernstein) tomorrow.

"One exciting thing for me is that my father's here this weekend. It's the first time in 24 years that he has been at a race. Right now he's with Larry Meyer looking at discs (clutch discs). Some things never change. Maybe I can give him a win this weekend. We'll see."

Eliminations will get underway at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Entering eliminations, Baca sits in the 10th spot with 272 points in the POWERade Top Fuel point standings, but is only 47 points behind No. 5.
