Performance on the rise for Baca
Commerce, Ga. (May 10, 2004) -- Running his best elapsed time and speed of the season at the recently completed race at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway, David Baca hopes he is peaking at the right time as he prepares for this weekend's NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., not far from Metro Atlanta.
Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports American Racing Top Fuel dragster, will need all the performance he can muster as the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series prepares for its roughest stretch of the season -- six national events in the next seven weeks. Following consecutive races in Atlanta, Chicago and Topeka, the series will take just one weekend off before heading to Columbus, Ohio, Englishtown, N.J., and St. Louis.
"Our performance has been improving over the past two races and couldn't come at a better time," said Baca. "I would like to see both the car and the driver get a little bit more consistent as we head into this stretch of races ahead. This is where we must make a jump in the point standings if we want to meet our goal of a top five finish this year."
At the NHRA O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals, Baca, who is currently in the No. 10 spot in the POWERade point standings, just 47 points behind fifth, ran a season-best pass of 4.528 seconds at 324.83 mph.
"We need to be consistently in the low 4.50-second range, then work our way down to the high- to mid-40s (4.40-second range)," declared Baca.
The NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals opens with two professional qualifying sessions for the nitro classes on Friday (May 14) at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and two final qualifying sessions on Saturday (May 15) at noon and 3 p.m.. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. All times is Eastern Time (ET).
Same-day television coverage can be seen on ESPN2 with qualifying highlights on Saturday (May 15) from 6-8 p.m. and eliminations on Sunday (May 16) from 7-10 p.m. All times is Eastern Time (ET).
