Commerce, Ga., May 15, 2004 - Warmer weather gave way to tricky conditions for Funny Car crew chiefs and teams during the final day of qualifying for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.

Former Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon qualified the Advance Auto Parts Chevrolet Monte Carlo 14th with his run from Friday of 4.977 seconds at a career best speed of 324.12 mph.

"We found a problem with the wheelie bar," explained Pedregon. "The car hasn't been launching properly and it's been spinning the tires. I spoke with Wes (Cerny) and he thinks he found the problem but we won't know until we make a run down the race track."

"The great thing about having a two-car team is in times like this, the crew chiefs can compare notes," added Pedregon. "We're going to look at what Tony has been doing and do that to our car. I'm confident we'll get the setup right for the car. We're looking forward to having a good day tomorrow."

Pedregon's teammate and brother Tony Pedregon is the number one qualifier with a track record elapsed time of 4.765 with the fastest speed in NHRA Funny Car history at 329.83 mph.

Pedregon will face Tim Wilkerson in the first round of final eliminations scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. Pedregon holds a 4-3 advantage over Wilkerson in race day competition.

Television coverage of final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, May 16.
