McClenathan #1 after first day of qualifying.
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 2, 2003) -- Cory McClenathan, from Riverside, Calif., driver of the Darrell Gwynn Racing-owned, NY Yankees/Berryman Products-backed Top Fuel dragster finished #1 after the first day of qualifying for the 23rd annual NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.
In the opening qualifying session, McClenathan blasted his NY Yankee/Berryman dragster to the finish line in 4.607 seconds at 318.32 mph to secure the top spot. Heavy rains, accompanied by lightning and thunder, washed out the second of the two scheduled qualifying sessions for Friday.
McClenathan's crew chief John Stewart had the following to say regarding the opening pass: "We never go out in the opening session intent on qualifying number one. While that (#1) is always your ultimate goal during qualifying, we are more intent on getting the car from point A to point B. The weather conditions changed from the time the cars at the front of the pack ran until we ran. I made a few changes in tire pressure and timers and away we went. It was on the edge of losing traction but held together for the entire run."
With weather conditions forecasted for much improvement, the fuel cars will have two more opportunities to improve their position on Saturday.
