BAZEMORE AND MATCO TOOLS TEAM BACK IN GROOVE FOR COLUMBUS
HEBRON, Ohio (May 12, 2006) - Whit Bazemore and the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team are back in a competitive racing groove as they prepare for the May 19-21 NHRA Nationals at National Trail Raceway, just outside of Columbus, Ohio.
Bazemore is pumped by the car's improved performance in the last few NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events (two semifinal finishes in a row). And, despite a first-round loss at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., on May 7, the two-time U.S. Nationals champion is looking to advance even further up the team's development ladder as the NHRA circus heads to another set of back-to-back events: Columbus, Ohio, and Topeka, Kans., on Memorial Day weekend.
"Atlanta was a tough race because of the first-round (loss)," said Bazemore, runner-up at National Trail Raceway in 1997 and No. 1 qualifier last year and in 2002. "We're going to be working hard in qualifying to get the Matco Tools Dodge Charger qualified in the top half as quickly as we can, but at the same time we're going to be working on the car's reaction time. We've had to change the tune-up considerably earlier in the year to get the car down the race track consistently, but that change has cost us a little bit on the starting line. So, we're going to work on that some. I'm looking forward to getting to Columbus."
Bazemore has qualified in the top half of the 16-car field in four of the first seven events of this season.
"I'm impressed with the progress our team has made," he continued, "and I'm proud of the guys, and I'm happy that we're getting the Matco Tools Dodge into a more competitive situation virtually every race. That makes me feel very good and positive going into every event from here on out."
