COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sunday June 17) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the PiranaZ Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock, drove his truck all the way to his first final round here today at the 37th Annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.
Whisnant met Winston Champion Bob Panella in the final round. Whisnant took the starting line advantage with a .434 light, but it would not be enough to hold Panella off. Panella caught him at the top end to take the win. Panella ran a 7.530 / 178.95 mph to Whisnant's 7.624 / 177.25 mph.
On his way to his first final round appearance Whisnant defeated Taylor Lastor, Jeff Gracia, and Todd Patterson.
"I am very happy," said Whisnant. "We didn't win, but we got to the final and we have to be proud of that. We are having a good time that's for sure.
"I knew coming into this round that I had to take a shot at Bob (Panella). He had me covered, so I needed to be out on him. I did that. My light was .434, so I was out first, but it wasn't enough. He caught me at the top end. I was a good, close race. If you are going to have to lose, it should always be that close.
"This is a fun time for our group. There is a group of us with out here with Jenkins motors: Don Smith Victor Cagnazzi, Scott Perin, and me. We are going after the guys who have been winning all the time. Don't get me wrong, my hats off to those guys. They have made great power and deserve to have won as many races as they have, but the fans love to see someone new win. I just want to be the next Jenkins team to win.
"This is also great to finally get my brother Terry to a final round, and to also get PiranaZ in their first final. This is great for my sponsor Jeff Sommers and PiranaZ and for my family and team. It is a great way to say thank you for all the hard work, support and dedication. I could only thank them one way better, which would be to win. Next time."
The next stop for the Pro Stock Trucks will be the 5th Annual Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals in Madison, Ill. June 21 - 24.
