Tony Pedregon Qualifies in Top-Half of Field at National Trail Raceway
Columbus, OH, June 12, 2004 -- Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon drove the Quaker State Chevrolet Monte Carlo to a weekend best of 4.837 seconds at 317.87 mph in the final qualifying session today for the NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio to claim the 8th spot.
"We were finally able to put a nice run together in the final session today," said Pedregon. "We had a fuel pump go bad during the warm up before the first session today and we put a new one in but were still just a little too aggressive. In the final session we were able to get the car down the track without anything going wrong. Dickie (Venables) and Kurt (Elliott) have been working hard to get this Quaker State Chevrolet to get down the track without any issues and they were able to make it happen in that session.
We're in the top-half of the field which is always a good advantage over your competitor because you have lane choice," added Pedregon. "But they've really done a great job with this facility and with the resurfacing of the track. It's going to be a great race tomorrow and we're looking forward to going some rounds."
Pedregon will face Del Worsham when final eliminations begin at 11:00 a.m. (ET) tomorrow. Pedregon has a 22-10 advantage over Worsham in race day competition.
Pedregon's teammate Cruz Pedregon earned the top-qualifier award with a track record elapsed time of 4.769 seconds at 301.00 mph.
