Johnson Races to No. 11 Spot at Columbus

HEBRON, Ohio. (June 12, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. saved his best run of the weekend for his final qualifying attempt as the five-time NHRA winner qualified his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car in the No. 11 spot Saturday at National Trail Raceway.

Following a delay because of strong downpours that blanketed central Ohio, Johnson, who earned his first career victory at National Trail Raceway in the Top Alcohol Funny Car category in 1988, improved upon Friday's two qualifying runs, cruising to a pass of 5.014 seconds at 280.78 mph on Saturday's opening pass. On his fourth and final qualifying effort of the weekend, Johnson's Mike Green-tuned Chevy flopper blasted to a run of 4.851 at 317.71 to grab the No. 11 qualifying position.

"We knew what we wanted to run, we just couldn't get everything together at once," Johnson said. "When we did, we were confident we'd make a solid run and it did. That gives you a lot more confidence going into race day. It ran a mid-4.80 on the final pass and shows a lot of potential to run better. I talked with Mike (Green) and he's looking for another five-hundredths (of-a-second) out of the car. So, I'm pretty confident going up there for the first round on Sunday."

Johnson hopes to go rounds on Sunday when he faces No. 6 qualifier Gary Scelzi in the first round of Funny Car eliminations. Johnson has a .500 (1-1) career record against the former three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion.
