JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES SKOAL RACING CHEVY SEVENTH AT COLUMBUS
HEBRON, Ohio (May 20, 2006) Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Funny Car to the No. 7 qualifying position Saturday at National Trail Raceway after clocking a qual! ifying-best 4.752-second effort on Friday evening.
The Iowa opened qualifying on Friday afternoon with a solid 4.841-second pass, and then used a tune-up from veteran crew chief Mike Green to power the Skoal Racing flopper to a performance of 4.752 seconds at 325.92 mph to earn the No. 7 qualifying position. It is the fifth time this season that Johnson will start in the top half of the 16-car order. 12 of the 16 qualified cars ran in the 4.7-second range this weekend at Columbus.
"We had a good qualifying effort," Johnson said. "We got in on Friday, which allowed us to play on Saturday and try a few things. We were experimenting, but the track wouldn't hold it with the sun out. We know what we can get away with. It's supposed to be partly cloudy and pretty cool on Sunday, so we'll set the car up like it was on Friday and try to run a mid to low 4.70."
Johnson will face off against No. 10 qualifier Jim Head in the first round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday morning at National Trail Raceway. Johnson is 4-1 in his career versus Head.
