HEBRON, Ohio. (June 11, 2004) 0x2022 Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the 12th quickest time of the day Friday at National Trail Raceway with a performance of 5.397 seconds at 197.51 mph.

On his opening run of the weekend, the Indianapolis resident was on pace for a low 4.9-second elapsed time before the blower belt broke causing Johnson's Mike Green-tuned flopper to slow to the 5.397, 197.51 effort. He followed that up by clocking a pass of 5.699 at 179.23 on his second of four scheduled qualifying attempts. Friday's qualifying was delayed due to strong rains earlier in the day.

"I think that everybody underestimated how good this race track was," Johnson said. "With all the rain, you didn't think the track would be that good because Columbus is not known to be a tight race track. Maybe the rain helped this place? The track is really good. We went up there and our car wasn't aggressive enough and the car shook the tires like most of the Funny Car field did.

"I pedaled the car to try and save the run, but the engine just didn't sound right. I knew we were already in the show. So, instead of blowing something up, I thought that I'd just save parts and come back and do it again on Saturday."

Johnson, who won his first career race at National Trail Raceway in Top Alcohol Funny Car in 1998, hopes to move into the top half of the Funny Car order when qualifying resumes at 1 and 3:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.
