JOHNSON JR. FINISHES 9TH AFTER FIRST DAY OF QUALIFYING AT COLUMBUS

HEBRON, Ohio (May 20, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the provisional No. 9 qualifying position Friday at National Trail Raceway.

Johnson powered his blue Monte Carlo flopper to a run of 5.959 seconds at 195.34 mph on his opening run of the weekend at the historic Ohio drag strip after a cold and dreary morning in central Ohio. On his second pass of the day, the Skoal Racing Chevy posted solid early incremental times before shaking the tires and coasting to a run of 8.728 at 107.53. Johnson's 5.959-second elapsed time placed him ninth in the Funny Car order. There are 19 cars attempting to make the cut for this weekend's NHRA race.

"The conditions changed drastically on Friday," Johnson said. "I was confident that we could go down the track, but I guess the track went away and made it tough for all of us. Like many other cars, we fought tire shake issues. I think we can come out tomorrow and improve and move up in the order."

Johnson and Don Prudhomme's Skoal Racing team eye a spot in the top half of the Funny Car order when qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (ET) at National Trail Raceway. Johnson qualified 11th at the Pontiac Performance Nationals last year.
