Howard still looking for 'breakout' event in Columbus.
KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio - As in many sports, the highest highs can be followed by the lowest lows. Such has been the case for NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard this year. After having a career best year last season, winning the Division 4 Championship and finishing fifth nationally, this season the team has had a dismal year full of disappointments. After staying over to test at the recent O'Reilly Summer Nationals in Topeka, Howard and her team hope to turn the corner for the year during this weekend's Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing at National Trail Raceway just outside of Columbus, Ohio.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., made it to the quarterfinal round in Topeka, and felt that her tuner Tom Conway has started to get their severe tireshake problem figured out. She also felt that the testing after the event put them further in the right direction.
"The tireshake problem isn't all the way fixed," said Howard. "It's definitely better; it's drivable now. Topeka was a good race for us, and the testing afterwards really helped out. I have confidence that Tom and the team will keep things going in that direction this weekend in Columbus. I just have to do my best driving the car, that's my job. We're just going to take it one round at a time."
"It's like I've said all season, we have a new car, and it is going to take runs down the track to figure it out, you can't do that sitting at home. While we haven't given up on this season by any means, if we can get the car lined out by the end of the year, hopefully we can come out strong again next year."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday morning. First round of eliminations will start Saturday afternoon, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
